School Nurses in South Yorkshire have recently added the 1 litre orange Bio-bin® to their HPV vaccination kit. The vaccine is currently being offered to all girls between the ages of 12 and 18 as part of an NHS drive to combat the spread of the HPV virus, one of the principal causes of cervical cancer. Some nurses are now required to segregate needles and soft waste rather than disposing of everything in a sharps container.
The Bio-bin® provides a user-friendly solution to this policy. Each nurse can easily fit a fold flat 1 litre Bio-bin® in their HPV kit to take with them to school vaccination sessions and because of the lightweight paper construction, there is no need for them to be weighed down by an extra bulky, plastic container.
This segregation using the low cost Bio-bin® also means an overall saving on waste disposal. As well as the HPV vaccination programme, the Bio-bin® is also being used in the diphtheria, tetanus and polio school vaccination schemes
